So as you say, the new slide has two more holes, a better anti-friction coating and a diaphragm that is shaped different and stiffer. This is an acknowledgment that the factory recognized a problem and redesigned the diaphragm and slide. This is a contradiction to an earlier report that changes were not necessary, or made to the Savage carburetor.
After running one tankful of gasoline mixed with Chevron carburetor cleaner and then since, using MARVEL oil in the gasoline; I have not had a reassuring problem. Unlike you I have never opened up the carburetor (only the float chamber). I am content for the time being, with a regular routine of mixing MARVEL oil, with the gas.
